In the other article it says that the US growth in gas usage was 0.6% while China's was 15% but this says they're leading the US in clean energy????

Any form that we can go green it will be great. It's now China's turn to go through Industrial Revolution. It would be wise for them to go through Green revolution...

I agree with what you have posted, PissedCanuck! China and India are both nations to watch regarding pollution and how they are going to clean up their acts and over what time-frame.

It took America 150 years to grow dirty and then it took China 15 to grow dirty. This works in reverse as well. If America doesn't smarten up, it could take them 150 years to clean up its act and the Chinese could take 15 to clean up theirs or even better yet, America finds a way to clean up its act in 15 years and China finds an even better way to do it in 1 1/2 years.

Why do they keep using that same stupid arguement about how America got to develop? Does this mean they won't use seatbelts or airbags in those cars for another 75 years? Shun fuel injection for ~80 years? Or use computers until 2100?

I have followed politics for almost 40 yrs. I consider myself an independent-I voted for Anderson and Perot, but when I look at how Republicans and Democrats typically vote, I find myself on the Republican side of the fence.
Very few times have I agreed with the Democrats and usually the pork and overspending has come from that side.
All things being considered, both parties-or any party will be at fault until we realize that the current system-with multiple terms possible and influence from outside sources will corrupt nearly any politician.
Therefore, we need to 1). Vote everyone out in 2010, 2012 2). Initiate a state resolution to require all public servants limits on terms 3). Get rid of all outside influences-again thru the states 4). Get rid of federal pensions for politicians
If we don't do these items, we will be asking ourselves the same questions in 2010, 2012, 2014,....

China won't do it. They have no regard for their people-remember 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese-so they are expendable. Also remember Tienanmen square-they will just rub out all protesters.
China will let free enterprise grew as long as the political system is unaffected.

There are several flaws with the so called "Stimulus" plan. First there is the requirement of paying Union Wages, look what happened for GM and Chrysler after paying UAW wages. I want to know how building a rail system between Harry Reid’s home town and Disney World will stimulate the economy. Or how spending $1.5M on a tunnel to turtles can go under a highway stimulates the economy. You Liberals talk about all the Republican waste but fail to mention these pet projects which were thrown into this plan by the Democrats. I haven't met e Democrat yet who didn't want to raise taxes so they could afford a wasteful project in their hometown. Obama, Biden and crew insisted we needed this stimulus plan to prevent unemployment from reaching 8.5% and now look it is closing in on 10% and Biden comes out and says they misjudged how bad the economy was. What a bunch of hogwash. It wasn't as bad before they took office and started wasting all this money.

DEG is right. The Chinese government will fund the research and development and then let Chinese companies sell the technology globally. We need to develop our own technologies and beat the Chinese to market and to the patent office.

There are some very sharp Chinese. I would not underestimate them. However, I think our government should be offering some "carrots" to industry to create green products that compete directly with the current products.

China? Right. They only let the press see what they want us to see. Let's go back & see the video of their incursions against humanity, their people working 18 hour days for a fraction of what our unemployment pays, their toxic waste sites. My thought is I don't think hell is freezing over yet.

We may have been polluting for 150 years but that really was out of necessity because there was no clean energy. We have since made progress towards that goal and can basically spare China and other countries from having to reinvent the wheel. They can simply adopt the clean technologies we have invented.

sillywagon from New York...
Can you provide current citations for your comments?
Much of the US belief about China's attempt at going green is dated information. "It’s (China) spending US$221.3 billion — about 38% of its US$586-billion stimulus package announced in November. A particular focus: water distribution and wastewater treatment infrastructure. In the past three months of 2008 alone, China spent an estimated US$17 billion in economic stimulus, 10% of it on energy-saving and ecological projects. “China has not only more funding,” says Kachan, “but it also has a six-month lead-time on spending this money.”

That's why the Chinese have so many coal powered electric generation plants that their air pollution is terrible in many areas. The problem remains cost. Fossil fuels are still relatively cheap compared to the alternatives.

This article is another reminder of why I have never bought a book by Thomas Friedman. China isn't pursuing solar and wind and other sources to be "green." In another article I read about China it was stated that China has domestic reserves of coal to last 41 years. They need as much energy as they can get. In twenty years they will have 700 million cars, and Chinese want to live a prosperous middle class lifestyle that requires energy. China is not going to be able to get it from coal, so where is China going to get this energy from?

Given the environmental destruction these people seem to be engaging in over there in China, I'm not sure there will be anybody left to sell anything to, unless toxic corpses are in a buying mood. Geez, they burn plastics and strip out toxic metals from our PCs and other crap that we ship over there, and throw the parts that aren't worth anything in their rivers. They also live in landfills.
